iPhone 5

01 Jan 2013

The news is all over the world! iPhone 5 is here! No more speculations and wondering what, how, when…

We have been regularly informing you about any piece of news (and even rumors) concerning Apple’s new smartphone, but today we are really delighted to present our review on iPhone 5‘s features and specifications.

Design  [ taller, thinner]
iPhone 5 comes with a design definitely differing from its predecessors. It impresses with a wide 16:9 screen, thus making the device 4.87″ (123.8mm) tall, the width kept the same though. And it’s elegantly slimmer! iPhone 5 is just 0.30″ (7.6mm) thin!

If the front of the device looks pretty much the same, the back side is where most of the change is seen. It is no longer all-glass, but is mostly made of aluminum, with two stripes of glass at its upper and lower ends.  Funky!

Screen  [ 4-inch, 640x1136 pixels, 326 ppi ]
As said above, iPhone 5 starred with its wide 4 inches screen with a resolution of 640×1136 pixels. BIG! But the size and the pixels are not all good news here!

The increase in vertical resolution has also allowed Apple to keep the pixel density as high as 326 ppi, so everything on the screen will appear crystal-clear.

Another improvement is found in the color saturation field, the new display being 44% more saturated! This should make viewing photos and watching videos ever more enjoyable.

Also, due to the new in-cell touch technology used, the touch sensors of the display are now built right into the LCD panel, and this, too, should allow better visibility.

Apple has obviously considered well the fact that the smartphone has entered our every day lives firmly, and is used for all kinds of stuff, so competing with its “rivals”, the company has offered this display in order to improve the overall user experience, without however making the phone inconvenient to hold even for people with smaller hands.

This makes the iPhone 5, with its 4″ display, a very appropriate handset for the ‘common man’.

Processor and Memory  [ A6 SoC, 2x performance ]
iPhone 5 comes also with a new A6 (as it is called) system-on-a-chip, and is said to have a 2x faster CPU and 2x faster GPU compared to the A5 of iPhone 4S. And even though Apple has not announced the number of CPU cores, or at what frequencies they are clocked at, we can be pretty sure that the CPU is a dual-core. We believe that with its new iOS, iPhone shall rival and even get ahead of the competition. … For now!

Not much information about the RAM, either! Yet, we expect it to be 1GB, which will ensure the smooth operation of the OS and of all third-party applications.

The iPhone 5 will once again be offered in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB variants, each with a different price, of course.

Connectivity  [ LTE, LTE, LTE !!!]
Apple has added support for the newest and greatest commercial network standard, especially as now the LTE networks around the world are spreading fast.

The cellular modem inside iPhone 5 is capable of theoretical download speeds of 100 Mbit/s on LTE, and the HSPA+ support has also been improved considerably. It will now go as high as 42.2 Mbit/s on the downlink!

With this major update, the iPhone Wi-Fi radio has also been highly bettered. It now supports the newer and clearer 5GHz band, which should provide much better speeds.

Battery  [ 8-hour talk-time, 9.4-day stand-by ]
Not much has been said about the iPhone 5’s battery, which leaves us to think that not much has been changed about it.

What matters most however – the battery life – has been revealed. iPhone 5 offers  a talk-time of 8 hours on 3G, while pure stand-by is promised to be 9.4 days. Aside from that, the battery should also allow for up to 8 hours of 3G/LTE use, 10 hours of Wi-Fi internet use, video playback of up to 10 hours and audio playback of up to 40 hours. Goood!

Camera  [ 8MP, less noise, panorama ]
It is still an 8MP camera, of the iSight  type. No changes here, but the introduced A6 chip provides a better image processor, less noise, higher efficiency, faster operation of the camera with excellent low-light performance.

The front-facing camera will now support HD resolutions, which means HD video calls!

A new (for Apple) software feature, called “Panorama”, has been introduced, which will let you take great panoramic shots.

1080p, 30fps video recordings made with the iPhone 5 should benefit from better video stabilization and clearer audio, due to the better microphone system.

All in all – no big surprises as far as the camera is concerned. Perhaps Apple is saving the big camera surprises for next year!

Software  [ iOS 6 ]
It has always been clear that with the new phone a new iOS shall come, too. So, iPhone 5  comes with its brand new iOS 6 right out of the box!

iOS 6 offers a number of cool new features, which will improve and enrich the user experience – a smarter Siri (sports, movies, restaurant information), Facebook integration, an all-new Maps application with cool Flyover 3D view and turn-by-turn navigation, full-screen mode in Safari, FaceTime over cellular networks and more.

iOS 6 shall be available also to iPhone 4S, 4 and even the 3GS.

What more can it offer? Well, we have to wait until September 19th when Apple shall give it the stage for a more detailed presentation.
